City Power Johannesburg has announced that an 8-hour planned power outage will affect 15 suburbs in the city.

A planned power outage is scheduled to affect 15 suburbs in Johannesburg on Thursday, 15 May 2025.

REASON FOR POWER OUTAGE

The power outage is due to maintenance work that the power utility regularly does on it’s electricity network.

“The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,” the statement read. 

AFFECTED SUBURBS

These are the suburbs that will be affected by the power outage on Thursday, 15 May 2025, from 9:00 to 17:00, these are the suburbs affected:

  • Heather Road
  • Kingsway road
  • Church Street
  • Pennylane Street
  • Grand Central Boulevard
  • Moritz Ave
  • North Street
  • Lupton Drive
  • Broadway Walk
  • Nupen
  • McDonald
  • Aitken
  • Part of Richards
  • Pendullum
  • Jabilee and Nupen

CABLE THEFT RESULTS IN POWER INTERRUPTION IN DENVER

City Power Johannesburg mentioned that Denver in Cleveland Substation is currently facing a power interruption due to a cable theft.

According to City Power, criminals stole critical infrastructure, which disrupted the power supply in the area.

“Our teams are currently on site to begin the process of repairing the damage and restoring power. This may take some time, depending on the extent of the theft and availability of materials,” said City Power.

The power utility apologised for the inconvenience caused.

In other news, a vandalised transformer has resulted in a power outage in Alexandra Substation.

The areas affected are Lombardy East, Lombardy and nearby areas.

  1. Avoid overloading plugs and beware that the load on sockets does not exceed 3 kw.
  2. Avoid touching appliances while taking a shower or in a bath.
  3. Make sure to bring a qualified electrician for installation and make sure that you receive a Certificate of Compliance.
