’30 Hour queues’ for visitors paying final respects at Queen’s coffin

The UK government has issued a strict list of rules for those wishing to pay their final respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II as her coffin lies in state at the Palace of Westminster also known as the House of Parliament.

The palace will officially open to the public on Wednesday 14 September at 17:00. It will remain open for 24 hours a day until it closes on Monday 19 September at 06:30.

On Thursday 8 September, Queen Elizabeth died surrounded by close family members at her Balmoral estate in Scotland. She will be buried in a state funeral on Monday at the St. George’s Chapel, on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

LONG QUEUES TO SEE QUEEN ELIZABETH’S COFFIN

According to a statement issued by the UK government, royal fans are expected to wait in long queues – and possibly overnight to see the coffin of Queen Elizabeth.

It read: “You will need to stand for many hours, possibly overnight, with very little opportunity to sit down, as the queue will keep moving.

“Please consider this before you decide to attend or bring children with you”.

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR THE PUBLIC

The statement also issued a comprehensive list of what was acceptable – and what was not.

Do’s

  • Do wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions, and the likelihood of standing in queues throughout the day and night.
  • Do pack food and drinks (in clear bottles) to be consumed and disposed of before you enter the security search point outside Westminster.
  • Bring a small portable mobile phone charger in case your phone battery dies.
  • Do carry your good in a small bag – with just one zip.

Don’ts

  • Don’t carry large bags or rucksacks with multiple compartments and zips.
  • Do not bring flasks or water bottles, except clear water bottles. All food or liquids must be consumed in the queue or disposed of before you enter the security search point at the Palace of Westminster.
Don’t bring any flowers or tribute items like candles, soft toys, and photographs as they are not permitted to be left inside the Palace of Westminster. Floral tributes, however, can be taken to the dedicated floral tribute area in Green Park.
  • Don’t bring sharp items, including weapons that could compromise public safety.
  • Items such as paint sprays, fireworks, smoke canisters, flares, whistles, laser devices, and other items that are hazardous or can cause a disturbance or noise are strictly prohibited.
  • Don’t bring cooler bags, sleeping bags, blankets, folding chairs, or any kind of camping equipment.
