A new streaming app for DStv subscribers in SA?
Canal+ is considering offering its streaming app to DStv customers in South Africa, as it works to grow subscribers in the country.
French media group Canal+ is considering deploying its streaming app to customers of South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice Group, following its acquisition of the company late last year.
The Canal+ streaming app aggregates content through partnerships with platforms including Apple TV and Warner Bros Discovery’s HBO Max, potentially allowing MultiChoice subscribers to access multiple services through a single interface.
“All of the content is embedded on the Canal+ app, and as a user you do not have to go on another app,” Canal+ Chief Financial Officer Amandine Ferre said in an interview on Thursday.
Integration decisions for streaming app still pending
Last year, Canal+ gained control of MultiChoice in a transaction that valued the African broadcaster at about $3 billion.
MultiChoice is a part-owner of streaming service Showmax, alongside Comcast Corp, and operates primarily in southern and eastern Africa, as well as Nigeria and Ghana. Canal+ already has a significant footprint across francophone West Africa.
Despite the acquisition, Moneyweb reports, Ferre said the company has not yet made a final decision on the future of Showmax, nor on the timing and scope of rolling out the Canal+ app across countries where MultiChoice operates.
Investor sentiment was buoyed by the update, with Canal+ shares rising as much as 15% in London on Thursday, pushing the stock to a record high.
