Saldanha Bay councillor Arthur Gqeba is in hospital fighting for his life.

Gqeba and another person were shot on 1 September

Gqeba was shot several times on Thursday, 1 September. He is reportedly in critical condition. Gqeba and another person were wounded after a gunman opened fire on them the evening of 1 September.

EWN reports that Gqeba was shot eight times while in Vredenburg and was rushed to hospital. 

ANC Saldanha Bay chief whip describes the scene

The Chief Whip for the African National Congress (ANC) in Saldanha Bay Zandile Komani-Nkohla said that upon arrival she found two of her comrades were rushed to hospital.

“When I arrived there, I found two of my comrades rushed to hospital. When I had stopped, they asked me to turn around because councillor Gqeba had just been shot,” said Komani Nkohla.

ANC councillor and branch secretary gunned down in Eastern Cape

Meanwhile, it was reported that the police in the Eastern Cape have launched a manhunt for the alleged killers of two Nelson Mandela Bay ANC members who were gunned down on Monday, 2 May.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the shooting took place at approximately 12:00 in KwaNobuhle. The party has identified the deceased as Ward 43 councillor Andile Andries and branch secretary Lubabalo Keso.

The police believe Andries and Keso were approached by a Quantum taxi whose occupants fired several shots, killing the ANC members at the scene, before speeding off. The number of suspects that were in the vehicle is unknown at this stage. Read the full story here.

Shootout at ANC councillor’s home days after being dragged out of office

It was also previously reported that political violence is surging at the start of 2022. In the last two weeks, two councillors have been gunned down in various parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Now, ANC councillor, Nanziwe Rulashe, who went viral this week for being dragged out of her office in the Eastern Cape, has had gunmen open fire on her house.

Rulashe is a senior ANC Amathole district municipality councillor and mayoral committee member. She made headlines when a video emerged of her being dragged out of the district’s head offices and assaulted.

Local police confirmed on Sunday that Rulashe’s home was shot at during the early hours of the morning. Read the full story here.
