Cape Town’s learner’s licence testing centres get a digital upgrade

Cape Town is one step closer to implementing the Computerised Learner’s Licence Testing (CLLT) system at its driving licence testing centres (DLTCs).

In a recent statement issued by the City of Cape Town, all 18 of the Mother City’s DLTCs will have this digital system installed.

Two facilities – Milnerton and Eastridge – are the last two facilities that are currently being prepared for this installation.

CLLT SYSTEM: MAXIMISING EFFICIENCY FOR LEARNER’S TEST

Per the statement, the CLLT system replaces the traditional paper-based testing process.

In its stead, learner licence applicants can take the test by using digital touchscreens to answer randomly generated questions.

The system offers several benefits for applicants, specifically:

  • Instant digital processing ensures faster, more accurate results.
  • Reduces the risk of corruption through secure and standardised testing.
  • Equipped with fingerprint verification and touchscreen functionality.
  • Tests are available in all 11 official languages.
  • Supports hearing-impaired applicants.
  • Uninterrupted service, allowing it to remain operational during electricity outages.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO LEARNER’S LICENCE

Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, has hailed the CLLT system and its associated perks.

“This is a faster and more reliable system, which will not only improve efficiency, but will [also] reduce the waiting periods associated with paper-based, manual tests,” said Smith.

“The digital system reduces opportunities for cheating, and it draws from a randomised database of questions. It also eliminates the possibility of fixed answer sheets being leaked.”

Chief Inspector Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services, echoed the sentiment: “We are not only keeping up with digital progress, but it’s part of a broader effort to improve service delivery and provide greater accessibility for all our residents.”

Indeed, for the residents of Cape Town, the CLLT system offers a streamlined experience, one that greatly eases the process of obtaining a learner’s licence.
