Chiefs coach: I’m available to meet Broos any time

Arthur Zwane has responded to Hugo Broos' continued criticism of the PSL and ongoing battles to meet local coaches.

Chiefs coach: I’m available to meet Broos any time

Bafana Bafana laboured to a lacklustre 1-0 win over Botswana 1-0 in a friendly international played at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night. A curling free kick from midfielder Teboho Mokoena in the 37th minute was enough to earn the home team the win, which came just days after Broos’ charges comfortably beat Sierra Leone 4-0 in another friendly international.

Broos has once again implied the quality of the PSL is not high enough to produce players who can excel at the next level. The South African coach also once again highlighted that the league seems to be stopping him from meeting up with PSL coaches to discuss key matters that impact the national side.

Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has subsequently suggested he has never heard directly from Broos, but that he would be happy to meet at any stage if he wants.

Broos decided to completely change his starting lineup for Tuesday’s clash, and has clearly stated that he was unimpressed with some players who won’t be called up next time by the coach.

“On the other side I’m not happy with the performance today. This is not what we expected. I think it’s clear that some players are maybe not good enough or are not able to bring what you have to do on this level. PSL is something but international games are tougher, are quicker, are different.

“Therefore also I chose to have two teams to see what those teams can do, what the players can do. Again, today I’m not happy with it, I’m really not happy, but we won and that’s the most important thing.”

Zwane also responded to this talk and stated his belief that players would always improve with more experience at national level.

“If a player doesn’t have a cap, he’ll always not be ready until he is settled,” Zwane said as quoted by SABC Sport. “The more he plays in the national team, the better for the player. Because if he doesn’t get an opportunity at all, there’s no way he can be better.

“So, that’s how I see it – even me, as a player, the more I was getting games with the national team, the better I was getting at the time. So, if you’re not going to be getting that call-up then how will you improve as a player? Because the only time you can get better is if you’re given the opportunity [to play].”

Earlier this year – when Bafana were progressing through their all-important 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers – Broos eventually apologised for comments that were seen to be ‘disrespectful’ to South African football.

In an extensive tirade at that time, Broos suggested “we don’t have those quality players that are playing in Europe,”, and further stated “let’s face the problem that the level of the PSL is not high enough”.

However, when addressing the SAFA leadership and its members during the extra-ordinary congress in June, Broos sought to clarify and apologise for his comments, which were not well received across many sectors of local football.

On Tuesday, though, Broos once again highlighted why he had made those comments and stuck to his view that there was a real problem with the quality levels of the local game.
