Derek Watts says Castle Lite ad was in jest: ‘I’m a boring person’
'Carte Blanche' co-host Derek Watts claimed he had a 'ton of fun' in his 'cringe-fest' Castle Lite advertisement cameo.
Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts – and particularly his dance moves – was a trending topic of conversation this week after he starred in an advertisement for Castle Lite.
The veteran investigative journalist found himself being ripped to shreds over his dancefloor antics. One tweep even compared him to a “giraffe on rollerblades”
But whilst the TV personality is known for his serious demeanour, the cameo was all about proving the opposite was true.
DEREK WATTS REVEALS MOTIVATION BEHIND CASTLE LITE AD
Derek Watts – who has been the face of Carte Blanche for over three decades – made his cameo appearance in the beer advertisement this week.
In the sketch, the well-known face is seen visiting a bar after having a rough day. He said: “I’ve been on TV for 38 years and people think I’m this really serious guy. Maybe I am serious, but the world is a serious place”.
In a typical barman vs patron scene, Derek is then handed a beer – a Castle Lite – to “drown his sorrows”.
After one sip, his mood is instantly uplifted and the presenter then hits the dance floor to let loose.
But despite the anticipated backlash, Derek Watts was keen to accept the offer from Castle Lite.
He told The Citizen: “When I first heard of the concept of the ad I wondered to myself what they might have seen in me as I can be quite a boring person.
“It made me think about my job and how I interact with other people, whether at the shops or in a restaurant.”
He added of his “cringe-fest” dance moves: “While it’s not Strictly Come Dancing I got to do a few moves and had a ton of fun while I was at it,”
CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF ‘CARTE BLANCHE’
Carte Blanche executive producer John Webb added that they were also inclined to change the public perceptions about the investigative TV show, which airs on M-Net on Sunday nights.
He added to the publication: “Carte Blanche is often (unfairly, in our view) described as overly negative. This commercial was the perfect opportunity to show the opposite is often true.
“The ad doesn’t take itself too seriously. And perhaps that’s something we should all take to heart – especially given the dreadful experience of the past two years”.
