eThekwini warns residents to reduce water consumption

The eThekwini Municipality has warned residents to reduce water consumption after a prolonged heat wave caused a sharp rise in daily water usage across the city. The municipality said the increased demand is stretching the water supply system and raising the risk of intermittent interruptions in some areas.

According to the municipality, “the ongoing heat wave has caused a sharp increase in water consumption across the city,” leading to elevated usage levels that are difficult to sustain. The municipality said higher temperatures typically drive up household and outdoor water use, placing additional pressure on infrastructure already operating near capacity.

Spike in water consumption causes reservoir pressure and supply interruptions

The municipality said the spike in demand has begun to affect reservoir performance.

“The high demand is placing significant strain on the Municipal water distribution network,” the city said.

Furthermore, water engineers continue to monitor reservoir levels and system pressure, but persistent high demand limits the network’s ability to recover between peak periods. The municipality warned that without reduced consumption, more frequent or prolonged disruptions could occur, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.

Residents were reminded that even small changes in daily water use can ease the burden on the system. Cutting back on non-essential water use, fixing leaks, and limiting outdoor watering were cited as effective ways to help stabilise supply.

Municipality urges cooperation to stabilise supply

Additionally, the municipality appealed for public cooperation, noting that responsible water use is essential to protecting the supply for all communities.

“Residents are urged to use water sparingly to allow reservoirs to recover and maintain a stable supply,” the municipality said.

It added that reducing consumption will “help restore system pressure and ensure consistent water availability for all communities,” especially during periods of extreme heat.
