In a discussion with SABC Sport, McKenzie said he expected Team South Africa to return home with ‘eight medals’ from this year’s Games.

Eight seems highly optimistic, with the figure likely to be closer to two, maybe three.

Team SA will be represented by 138 athletes

Although he was adamant that it was a ‘surprise’, it appears clear that Team SA gold, silver and bronze medal winners will receive something on top of the financial incentives announced previously (outlined below) by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).

Then Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, did something similar when he splashed the cash following the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

As was first reported by The South African websiteTeam SA will be represented by a total number of 138 athletes in a record 19 different sporting codes in France.

Team SA has won 38 medals (11 gold, 18 silver, nine bronze) since readmission to the Olympic fold at the 1992 Barcelona Games – and 89 (27 gold, 33 silver, 29 bronze) overall since the country first competed in St. Louis in 1904.
