Gayton McKenzie: ‘I don’t like Kaizer Chiefs, but…’

Gayton McKenzie, the outspoken Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, has not let Kaizer Chiefs’ victory over Orlando Pirates slip by unnoticed in the wake of their Nedbank Cup triumph.

This past weekend the Glamour Boys produced a fabulous performance to beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 to at least somewhat wipe out 11 years of pain and frustration among the Amakhosi faithful after an extensive trophy drought.

Gaston Sirino had given Chiefs an early lead, which was pegged back before half-time, courtesy of Evidence Makgopa, before Yusuf Maart’s sweet volley decided the match, and the destination of the coveted trophy.

Taking to social media on Monday, McKenzie sent a message to Chiefs, which may have been somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but still had plenty of layers to unpack.

“I don’t like this team Kaizer Chiefs, it has caused me a lot of heartache in my life,” he commented. “But we should not let our hatred for Kaizer Chiefs blind us to the fact that it is an institution loved by millions. The streets of KZN were pure joy. Biggest team in Africa ever!”

If not Kaizer Chiefs, then who does Gayton McKenzie support?

McKenzie, who hails from Heidedal in Bloemfontein, has not had a PSL side to follow since the sale of Bloemfontein Celtic in 2021/.

Although some have sought to tempt him to choose one of the Soweto giants to support, he has always insisted that he remains a die-hard Bloem Celtic supporter, and will simply support all PSL teams in the meantime.

“I am like a man whose wife is in a coma,” McKenzie said on SuperSport TV.

“You look around but you don’t touch, you know your wife is coming back. You can’t be from the Free State and Bloemfontein and support anybody.

“Everybody has been wanting to know which team do you support. Bobby [Motaung] has been trying to make me a Kaizer Chiefs supporter, Irvin Khoza by virtue of his relationship with me has been trying to get me [to Orlando Pirates].

“You can’t and I can’t. You cannot support anyone else.”
