Hugo Broos could remain Bafana Bafana coach beyond 2026, says SAFA
Jordaan says talks will be held with Hugo Broos after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the door open for the coach to continue leading Bafana.
South African Football Association (Safa) President Danny Jordaan has insinuated that Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos could be retained beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 73-year-old Belgian coach said he would call it a time after the World Cup, having coached the South African men’s national soccer team for nearly five years.
Jordaan, though, said the discussion between Safa and Broos would take place after the tournament.
“One of the things that’s delivered success for our national teams – because many people ask, ‘Why are you achieving success now?’ The reason is simple,” the Safa president said as per SABC Sport.
Will Broos stay as Bafana coach?
“We have not changed coaches over the last four years and before the expiry of their contracts – Hugo Broos has been serving his contract, we have to discuss with him.
“He’s indicated that at the end of his contract he’ll have reached his retirement age, but we still have a conversation to have.”
Jordaan has explained the importance of having stability in the national team. Bafana has had Broos for nearly six years, while Banyana Banyana head coach Desire Ellis has been at the helm for a decade.
“Desiree Ellis has been with us for 10 years – never in the history of South African football have you had a coach appointed and staying the course, and it’s been difficult, very often people suggest why this or that coach must go,” Jordaan added.
Should Safa retain Hugo Broos after World Cup or find another coach?
