It’s official: East London and Graaff-Reinet RENAMED in government gazette

The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has gazetted a new set of geographic name changes, confirming that the town names of East London and Graaff-Reinet no longer exist.

The changes were signed off on Friday as part of several town and place renamings across South Africa.

This follows reports in January that East London was set to officially become KuGompo City, while Graaff-Reinet, the fourth-oldest city in the country, would be known as Robert Sobukwe Town.

The changes were included in a sign-off of 21 geographical name changes across the country by Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie.

The approvals were then confirmed by the South African Geographical Names Council.

After being formally gazetted on Friday, KuGompo City and Robert Sobukwe Town are now official.

Other Eastern Cape towns were also renamed. Adendorp becomes Bishop Limba, while Aberdeen is now Xamdeboo.
