Legendary New Zealand pacer Shane Bond voiced worries about the future of Jasprit Bumrah, the speedster from India, saying another injury in the same area may perhaps ruin his career.
After a back injury he suffered in the five-match away Test series against Australia, Bumrah missed the just finished Champions Trophy even though he was instrumental in guiding India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title last year. Uncertain to participate in the forthcoming 18th Indian Premier League (IPL), the Indian pacer is presently receiving rehabilitation at the Board of Control for Cricket in Bengaluru.
Bond, whose professional career was cut short by recurrent back injuries, underlined the need of workload management while warning that Bumrah might have his glittering career cut short should he sustain another back injury.
“It was Sydney when he went off for scans; some messaging about sprains and other injuries surfaced there. I fretted that it might be a bone injury surrounding that location rather than a sprain. Looking ahead at the tours and schedule, where are the chances to give him a break? Actually, where are the risk periods? And often, the IPL to the Test championship will be a risk, Bond was quoted as saying on a cricket news website.
“We can most likely then proceed with some confidence that we can carry him across the remaining formats if we can get him through the English summer and he is fit. It’s difficult since he is your greatest bowler, but if he sustains another injury in the same area, that may be a career-ender since I’m not sure you could have surgery on that place again.
