“Let’s help you Eskom, send me” – Gayton McKenzie

While Eskom explores other sources of energy to reduce power cuts, Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie has thrown his hat in the ring boasting a number of solutions.

GAYTON MCKENZIE RAISES HIS HAND TO HELP ESKOM

“ESKOM apparently needs 1000 megawatts to keep the lights on, let’s create 11 000 megawatts within the next five months which will keep the lights on in 2023 and is 11 times more than what you need,” McKenzie proposed.

The Central Karoo District Mayor madhttps://www.iol.co.za/business-report/companies/eskom-plans-to-immediately-access-existing-private-generation-of-1000-megawatts-1f8b5dea-86bb-4382-9013-34705c966512e his pitch to Eskom public. He implied that the Karoo would be the best fit to invest in to end load shedding.

Why?
Central Karoo is the most suitable place in South Africa to be used to create renewable energy, we have sun during the day, wind at night, vast tracts of land and evacuation capacity, you cannot find a better place anywhere in SA.

What do we need:

We need all red tape to be relaxed or cut out, we need the government to declare a State of Energy emergency, ban unions, and cut red tape. Get to work immediately.

How?
Invite110 solar companies to immediately each construct a 100-megawatt plant, give them an off-take from ESKOM, and you will have thousands of up-takers. Let them start immediately, you can even use state money and start a state renewable company but I wouldn’t advise that, let the private sector do it.

Result
You will have 11 times more energy than what you apparently needed at the beginning, the lights will be on in 2023. We just need political will and decisiveness from the government.

“I can lead this and have it all done in five months, send me.”

McKenzie

However, McKenzie’s pitch could be a little too late as today, Thursday, 22 September, Minerals and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe, signed off the Power Purchase Agreements with three preferred bidders under Bid Window 5 of the Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Programme.

This agreement will see the construction of renewable energy infrastructure in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape.
