Tilak Varma scored his first international century as India beat South Africa by 11 runs in the third Twenty20 international at on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old left-hander scored an unbeaten 107 off 56 balls in a 219-6 Indian total. Varma told SuperSport, “I was waiting for this for a long time, coming back after injury,” referring to his 2024 hand injury that limited his playing time. Varma embodied skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s “fearless cricket”.
After Marco Jansen bowled Sanju Samson for a second consecutive duck, he faced the third ball of the match at number three. He quickly attacked, hitting Jansen’s second and third balls for four and six to start an innings with eight fours and seven sixes.
“I was just thinking I have got an opportunity to bat at number three and I just wanted to express myself,” stated.
“We played the brand of cricket we wanted to play,” Suryakumar said, adding that Varma had demanded a batting promotion. “He requested it and responded,” stated the captain.
Klaasen smashed three sixes off leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy, India’s top bowler in the first two matches. Jansen hit a 16-ball half-century before falling leg-before to left-arm opening bowler Arshdeep Singh on the third delivery of the last over.
South Africa’s three no-balls and 10 wides, under pressure from Abhishek and Varma, were the difference between the teams, as India only bowled one wide.
