Malema slams ‘drunk’ Helen Zille at Soweto Derby

They may both support the same club – Orlando Pirates – but Julius Malema was not in support of Helen Zille’s social media posts about watching the Soweto Derby over the weekend.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader even went so far as to call the DA’s Joburg mayoral candidate a “drunk”.

MALEMA SLAMS ‘DRUNK’ HELEN ZILLE

On her social media platforms, Helen Zille shared her joy at watching the Soweto Derby alongside soccer fanatics at a what appeared to be a drinking hole in Johannesburg.

In pics posted on her Facebook account, the 74-year-old – a self-proclaimed Orlando Pirates fan – downed a bottle of beer as she cheered on her club.

Later, she posted a victory dance, celebrating the Buccaneers’ 3-0 defeat of longtime rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.

The pic of Helen enjoying both the soccer match and her beer went viral on X, with fellow politicians weighing in.

MK Party’s Mzwanele Manyi tweeted of it: “In Joburg we don’t want a mayor that celebrates brandishing alcohol, given the alcohol abuse in our townships.”

EFF’s Julius Malema – who watched the Soweto Derby from inside FNB Stadium – said of his DA mayoral candidate: “Le takgwa [It’s drunk].”

He also retweeted posts calling her a “drunkard” and irresponsible.

LONGTIME ORLANDO PIRATES FAN

While Helen Zille did not respond to Malema’s insult, she did clap back at Action SA’s Michael Beaumont, who claimed she was faking support for Orlando Pirates.

Beaumont tweeted: “I don’t think she could name a single player or provide any prior post demonstrating her support for Pirates.”

Helen responded by pulling up old tweets of her longtime support for the club.
