Need cash? Rent out your lawnmower, golf clubs or pool for a day

To make ends meet in today’s tough economic climate, one needs a second source of cash – ie a “side hustle”.

And South Africans know a thing or two about this, from selling goods on the side of the road to using social media to promote a small business.

Now there’s another way to make extra cash – by hiring out unused items for a day through an online marketplace called Strapp.

RENT OUT YOUR UNUSED GOOD FOR EXTRA CASH

Strapp – a place where you can hire out weird and wonderful items for a day in return for cash – is the brainchild of SA entrepreneur Darren de Abreu.

According to the businessman, Strapp is an online rental platform “built upon community and trust”.

Speaking to Cape Talk, Darren claimed that the platform gives South Africans the opportunity to “safely monetise items they may not be frequently using”. This, while “taking advantage of the country’s second-hand economy”.

From lawnmowers to golf clubs to gym equipment, electronics, and even vehicles, users are making extra cash by hiring out unused items.

There are also a few bizarre pieces like a lounge suite, a chocolate fountain, and a fruit juice to rent – for as little as R25 cash a day.

Of course, we are living in SA and the obvious question is – will users return the items after a day or make off with your goods?

According to the site, there are a host of safety features to prevent this, including a rating and review system, user verification, safety deposits, insurance, and quality checks.

NEED TO BORROW A POOL?

Meanwhile, with summer around the corner, many will be looking for affordable ways to cool off. And for those who don’t own a pool, there’s always the option to “hire” one for the day.

Swimply – the “Airbnb” of swimming pools – offers the public the chance to rent a private pool by the hour in return for quick cash.

The service can be filtered according to the preference of location, pool width and depth, and available amenities that are included.

Sadly, the service is not yet available in SA – but with warmer weather on the way, we hope to be chilling in an infinity pool in Camps Bay – for a few hours.
