Nick Kyrgios beats Daniil Medvedev to equal this astonishing 35-year-old record

Nick Kyrgios is known for talking the talk, but now he’s starting to walk the walk too.

The 27-year-old beat defending US Open champion Daniil Medvedev last night to reach his first quarterfinal at this tournament. In so doing, Kyrgios created his own slice of history.

Not since 1987, eight years before Kyrgios was born, has a male player defeated the world No.1 twice in the same year. Pat Cash, also an Australian, was the last man to do it, some 35 years ago.

This victory against Medvedev was Kyrgios’s fourth win over the Russian in five career meetings, as well as his third win over a World No.1. He beat Rafael Nadal all the way back in 2014 as a teenager at Wimbledon. He also beat Medvedev in Canada last month.

There’s never been any doubt about Kyrgios’s talent, but it’s often been questioned whether the 27-year-old works hard and it wants it enough. The tail-end of 2021 and the bulk of 2022 seem to prove that he does. Kyrgios lost to Novak Djokovic in this year’s Wimbledon final, a reward for some scintillating displays on the London grass.

Kyrgios wants to go all the way in New York and we’re excited to be along for the ride.

NOTE: Medvedev will officially drop out of the top world ranking spot after the US Open and any one of Casper Ruud, Rafa Nadal or Carlos Alcaraz can take his place, depending on results.
