A Nigerian national, who assaulted a police officer and attempted to bribe them, was arrested for possession of drugs.

NIGERIAN NATIONAL NOTICED AFTER TRAFFIC OFFENCE

The 34-year-old male was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Reaction (Undercover) Unit in possession of drugs, assaulting a police officer and bribery in the Johannesburg CBD at the weekend.

Explaining the incident JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said, “Sunday, 11 September 2022, whilst on patrol at Ntemi Piliso Street officers spotted and stopped a Brown KIA Picanto which was skipping red traffic lights.”

“Upon searching the vehicle, the officers found narcotics, 99 bags of nyaope in his possession,” he said.

Fihla added that as the officers confronted the Nigerian national regarding the drugs he became violent and struck an officer with his elbow whilst attempting to flee the scene on foot.

“Officers gave chase and apprehended the suspect who was resisting arrest at Ntemi Piliso and Hall Street.”

BRIBE ATTEMPT DID NOT WORK OUT

He further explained that the Nigerian national then attempted to bribe the officers with R430 for his release.

“The suspect was arrested and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS on multiple charges and he will appear in court during the course of the week,”Fihla confirmed.

On the same day, JMPD personnel impounded a Jeep Wrangler for number plate investigation in the Joburg Inner City.

According to JMPD Region F1 Operations officers, the vehicle was displaying a license disc which does not correspond with the number plate.

No arrests were confirmed on this particular case.
