A 79-year-old local man has died after reportedly falling from rocks into the sea at The Point in Mossel Bay.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), emergency teams were activated on Monday afternoon following eyewitness reports of a man who appeared to have fallen into the water.
NSRI Mossel Bay duty coxswain Michelle Roos said crews were alerted at 16:55, prompting a multi-agency emergency response.
Good Samaritan Pulls Man From Water
While rescue teams were en route, a local bystander entered the water in an attempt to assist.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Good Samaritan successfully managed to rescue the man and bring him back to the shoreline, where bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was immediately started.
NSRI rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene, while additional crew prepared rescue craft at the NSRI Mossel Bay Station 15 rescue base.
Emergency services including South African Police Service, Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services, ER24 and Western Cape Government Health EMS also responded.
Resuscitation Efforts Unsuccessful
On arrival, NSRI rescue crews joined paramedics in continuing CPR efforts.
Despite extensive attempts to revive the man, all efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was sadly declared deceased at the scene.
The deceased’s body has since been taken into the care of police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
NSRI Commends Bystander
The NSRI extended condolences to the family of the deceased man and praised the local Good Samaritan who entered the water to assist and initiated CPR before emergency crews arrived.
The organisation commended the bystander’s quick action and efforts to help during the emergency.
