URGENT DEADLINES FOR SASSA BENEFICIARIES  

Recipients of South African Social Security Agency grants are facing two pressing deadlines at the moment. The first is the Postbank card migration, which must be done before Monday 31 August 2026. All SASSA recipients still using the old Postbank Gold Card must switch to the new Postbank Black Card, or risk losing access to their payments. Moreover, Postbank has made clear the deadline will not be extended again.

Postbank says the switch is free, requires no paperwork and takes effect immediately. All you will need is a valid South African ID document. And you can use Postbank service points inside major retailers such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar. Plus, any fund balance remaining on your Gold Card transfers automatically to your Black card.

If you’re stressing about these urgent deadlines for SASSA beneficiaries, dial *120*355# for queries. The state-run bank reiterates that the new Black Card is safer than the old Gold card. It includes three free monthly withdrawals, one free card replacement and a free monthly statement. Plus, it says all accounts are protected against unauthorised deductions (like fake insurance, life policies, etc).

WARNING OVER SASSA GRANTS LAPSING

Meanwhile, more than 34 000 SASSA grants have lapsed in one province. But why? Bizarrely, all of these have occurred in the northerly province of Limpopo before the end of February 2026. After routine SASSA review processes were carried out, it appears that tens of thousands of families have been left without income.

The agency put out a release saying all affected beneficiaries received two notifications before their grants lapsed. Moreover, the agency insists no SASSA grants were incorrectly suspended. It says most lapses occur when beneficiaries fail to respond to review notices or update their information in time. Grants may also be suspended where undeclared income is suspected. Although SASSA notes that occasional informal income doesn’t automatically trigger suspension.

NO WARNING OF URGENT DEADLINES FOR SASSA BENEFICIARIES

Unfortunately, GroundUp investigated and found long queues at various SASSA offices in Limpopo. Some of the people interviewed say they received SMS notices just one day before payments were due. And this is the reason for the grant suspension. Meanwhile, SASSA acknowledges rural challenges and says it uses mobile teams, SMS alerts and radio broadcasts to reach beneficiaries for reviews.

Critically, beneficiaries whose grants have lapsed must reapply as new applicants. No backdated payments will be made, even if they qualify again. So, if you did not receive your grant last month and you suspect it has lapsed, visit your nearest SASSA office urgently to rectify the situation.
