Orlando Pirates, like Arsenal, now control their title destiny
Three games to go.
Orlando Pirates have had a great week. Like Premier League leaders Arsenal, they now control their own title destiny.
Orlando Pirates have parallels with Premier League giants Arsenal
It’s been 14 years since the Sea Robbers were champions of South Africa. That’s a painful wait in anyone’s books. Just ask Arsenal, whose last Premier League title came in 2004 when they went unbeaten through the entire campaign, earning themselves the ‘Invincibles’ tag. Now, the Gunners lead the way ahead of Manchester City by five points, although City have a game in hand. Mikel Arteta knows that if his Arsenal side win their three remaining assignments, they’ll be champions for the first time in 22 years. The Gunners have been runners-up in each of the last three campaigns. This season, they’ll also contest the Champions League final against PSG on May 30th.
Pirates take ‘control’ of the race
After a 1-1 draw between Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns, Pirates know that convincing wins in their three remaining fixtures will likely secure the title. They trail Sundowns by three points, with a game in hand, but have a favourable goal difference of +41; Sundowns’ sits at +34. Sundowns kick off first on Saturday against Siwelele, so Pirates could trail them by six points when their match with Magesi kicks off that evening. It’s going to the wire in 2025-26.
