Potential Candidates for Pakistan Cricket Captaincy

The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to announce a few potential candidates for the post of captain of the Pakistan cricket team after the resignation of Babar Azam.

The reports, on the other hand, have suggested that Saud Shakeel, top-order batter Fakhar Zaman, and Salman Ali Agha, an all-rounder, are being seriously considered for key positions.

It would be noticed that Shakeel had been declared vice-captain instead of Muhammad Rizwan in the two-Test series against Bangladesh, and impressed the selectors with his fine performance there.

Meanwhile, the name of the aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman is also being considered for the post as he has already led Lahore Qalandars in the PSL.

All-rounder Salman Ali Agha, despite being talented, has not taken up any leadership role to date on the domestic level.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to announce a few potential candidates for the post of captain of the Pakistan cricket team after the resignation of Babar Azam.

The consideration was earlier being made about the wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan. Gary Kirsten, too, felt that Rizwan could not bear the load of playing and leading the team in all three formats.

The sources maintained that Kirsten came to Pakistan in July for meetings and sharing of the report on T20 World Cup and added during this month he also met Babar to discuss captaincy issues. In fact, according to the reports, Kirsten was trying to convince Babar to remain captain in ODIs during the connection camp as well.

They said that he, ahead of the Bangladesh Cricket Board meeting today, is unconvinced about continuing as skipper after some distance with the team and lack of value for himself. He was not in touch with the board after the World Cup, they added. Even more importantly, Babar was not consulted on anything, although he had Earlier told a senior board official of his intention to quit the captaincy before making the announcement.

Significantly, Babar’s decision to step down as captain comes at a time when Babar was under severe criticism, especially since the Asia Cup where Pak utterly failed to entertain any performance and carried the same into the World Cup — in which the team crashed out before the semis.
