The South African Football Association (SAFA) has expressed its sadness following the passing of former Benoni United player Richard ‘Litre’ Lata.

Lata died on the morning of 16 April 2026 at a hospital in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

He was surrounded by family and was just weeks away from his 73rd birthday.

Career and legacy

A former midfielder and striker, Lata spent more than a decade with Benoni United, earning respect from team-mates and the broader football community for his contribution to the game.

His son, Charles Lata, said former team-mates are expected to play a role in both the memorial and funeral services.

Memorial and funeral details

The memorial service will take place on Thursday, 23 April, at the Church of Christ in Daveyton, starting at 14:00.

Lata will be laid to rest on Saturday, 25 April, at Christ Redeemer Anglican Church, also in Daveyton, with the funeral service scheduled to begin at 07:00.

Condolences

SAFA conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the Richard Lata family, friends, and the football fraternity.

“His passing is a huge loss, and we join his family in mourning. May his soul rest in peace,” the association said.
