SASSA issues SMS warning to grant beneficiaries

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has called on social grant beneficiaries to respond promptly to SMS notifications requesting them to undergo grant reviews.

The agency warned that beneficiaries who fail to present themselves at their nearest SASSA office after receiving such messages risk having their grants lapse, which could result in non-payment.

Social grant reviews requied

SASSA said in a statement that social grant reviews are required under the Social Assistance Act to ensure that assistance is paid only to eligible and deserving recipients.

“Beneficiaries must ensure that their contact details are updated on the SASSA system. Having updated details will confirm eligibility and life certification, including strengthening communication between the beneficiary and the Agency. It benefits beneficiaries by enabling them to receive important notifications which affect the status of the social grant,” the agency said.

Verify continued eligibility

The review process is intended to verify continued eligibility, prevent fraud and eliminate duplicate claims that could lead to the misuse of public funds.

Currently, grant reviews are conducted at designated SASSA offices and service centres.

The agency indicated that it is exploring the introduction of online review options in future to ease congestion at physical offices and reduce travel costs for beneficiaries.

For further information, beneficiaries can contact SASSA toll-free on 0800 60 10 11 during working hours, Monday to Friday.
