Sharks lock in Springbok Hooker until 2029

The Sharks have moved swiftly to secure the long-term future of rising Springbok star Ethan Hooker, extending the versatile back’s contract until 2029.

Hooker had already committed his future to the Durban outfit until 2027 after a breakthrough 2024 season, but his rapid development over the last 18 months has convinced the Sharks to further reward one of their brightest young talents.

At just 23 years old, Hooker has quickly become a key figure in the squad being assembled under coach JP Pietersen, with the franchise viewing him as a cornerstone for years to come.

Ethan Hooker’s Meteoric Rise

The utility back’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable.

After impressing consistently at franchise level, Hooker earned his first Test cap for the Springboks against Italy on 12 July 2025, before cementing his reputation during the Rugby Championship.

His breakout moment on the international stage came in Wellington, where he starred on the right wing in the Springboks’ emphatic 43-10 victory over the All Blacks, producing a mature display that earned widespread praise.

Comfortable both in midfield and out wide, Hooker has become known for his physical defence, relentless energy and attacking instincts.

Injury Blow Temporarily Halts Momentum

Hooker’s upward trajectory hit a brief setback in April after suffering a dislocated shoulder while scoring in the Sharks’ clash against the Ospreys in the United Rugby Championship (URC).

The injury required surgery in Durban and will rule him out of the Springboks’ opening Nations Championship Tests against England, Scotland and Wales.

The Sharks and Springboks are optimistic Hooker will be back in action for the blockbuster Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against the All Blacks in August and September.
