The legacy of Winnie Mandela redefined by granddaughters

The granddaughters of the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela explore their grandmother’s multi-layered legacy in a new Netflix documentary series titled The Trials of Winnie Mandela.

The streaming platform officially dropped the trailer for the political icon on Thursday, 2 April. The documentary premieres in April, coinciding with the eighth anniversary of her passing.

In 2024, the African National Congress (ANC) commemorated her sixth anniversary since her passing with a wreath-laying ceremony in Fourways, Johannesburg.

‘THE TRIALS OF WINNIE MANDELA’: A LEGACY REDEFINED

Through the lenses of Winnie’s granddaughters, Zaziwe Manaway and Swati Dlamini, they embark on a journey that reflects their personal perspectives on their prolific grandmother, whom they lovingly called “Big Mommy.”

Winnie’s former personal assistant, Zodwa Zwane, along with other contributors – both critics and supporters- shared their insights on Winnie.

The seven-part documentary is premised on everything about Winnie Mandela, from her victories, scandals, and experiences during the apartheid era. The archives include exclusive content from her later years.

It further unpacks the mystery shrouding her, which stems from the many facets of her illustrious legacy.

In the trailer, the granddaughters wrestle with questions like “Are you a murderer?” “Are you a kidnapper? “Did you have an affair with grandad?”

Therefore, as they reflect on the documentary, will they find answers to these pertinent questions?

In an official announcement from Netflix, additional details regarding the upcoming documentary are as follows:

Directed by the late, two-time Emmy Award®-winning documentary filmmaker Mandy Jacobson, the series unfolds from the perspective of Madikizela-Mandela’s granddaughters, HRH Princess Zaziwe Manaway (née Dlamini) and HRH Princess Swati Mandela-Dlamini, who is also credited as a producer, as they set out to find the essence of their iconic grandmother, affectionately known to them as ‘Big Mommy.”

“Through their journey, the story pieces together a portrait shaped by personal accounts, family memory, and public record.”

Audiences will hear the ‘Mother of the Nation’ in her own words as she reflects on her childhood, her activism, and her relationships as a wife, mother, and comrade, drawing on never-before-seen footage from the later years of the struggle icon’s life.”

ZAZIWE AND SWATI’S LOVE FOR STORYTELLING

Through their various projects, it is clear that Zaziwe and Swati have a penchant for storytelling, especially about their revered and legendary family.

The year was 2013 when the duo created and starred in their reality show, Being Mandela. The show lifted a veil on their lives and dynamics within their family.

Both of their grandparents were still alive to witness their first bite into the world of storytelling.
