Three men have died after gunmen opened fire at a taxi rank in Delft on the Cape Flats on Thursday morning.

The shooting took place at the taxi rank on Delft Main Road in the Voorbrug area shortly after 06:15.

Police said gunmen in a Toyota Quantum stopped at the rank and opened fire.

Officers arrived at the scene and found two men, aged 55 and 58, with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services declared both victims dead at the scene.

A third victim, aged 38, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.

Taxi rank violence suspected

Western Cape police spokesperson Brig André Traut said authorities believe ongoing tensions in the taxi industry may have sparked the attack.

“The suspects fled the scene after the shooting,” Traut said.

Detectives from the provincial Serious and Violent Crime unit have taken over the investigation. Police are now probing three counts of murder.

Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
