TWO factors preventing a Cassius Mailula/ Sundowns return!

Mamelodi Sundowns could be ready to pay the big bucks to see one of their ex-superstars back at the club.

Sundowns sold striker Cassius Mailula Toronto FC last season with great hopes his career would kick on in the MLS.

This came on the back of a brilliant breakthrough season at Sundowns. Mailula profited of an injury spell for top striker Peter Shalulile. The youngster would go on to establish himself in the starting line up He ended the season scoring 15 goals in 31 games, in all competitions. This type of form even attracted the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos with the player making his international debut in 2023.

Sundowns want Mailula back

That was not all that Mailula attracted, however, as rumours of European interest took off. In the end, he would leave Sundowns for the MLS, with the club striking a deal with Toronto. Unfortunately for the player though, he has not been able to live up to expectations. That, however, is not his fault, as he has hardly got a look in. In fact, whenever he has been given an opportunity, he has made an impression.

Mailula recently made his senior debut and scored his first goal for Toronto. Funny enough, he was immediately loaned out to their reserves. So far, he has three goal contributions in the seven games for the senior side. His lack of game time in the States, has seen him lose his place in the Bafana Bafana set up.

Earlier in the week, this publication reported that his former side Sundowns want to re-sign Mailula. But according to a source speaking to Soccer-Laduma maintains there could be two stumbling blocks.

Two stumbling blocks?

“The desire has always been there to bring Cassius (Mailula) back to the team. They even wanted him on loan in January when the MLS was off season but the period was too short compared to the money that could have been involved. Now they are looking at buying him back but what can hold things back is the transfer fee and also the salary. You know he was on a development salary when he left as he was from their juniors and now he will becoming back from another league. Then there is the issue of the transfer fee.” Said the source.

Would it be wise for Mailula to return to South Africa through Sundowns?
