Women’s T20 World Cup: India beat Pakistan by six wickets

An all-round batting and bowling performance by India saw them defeat Pakistan by six wickets to secure their maiden victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. The Indian batters chased a modest 106-run target in 18.5 overs with Shafali Verma scoring the highest run with 32 runs off 35 balls out of the Indian lot.

India’s chase had a jittery start as the experienced opener Smriti Mandhana fell prey to Sadia Iqbal in the fourth over of the game, having scored just 7 off 16 balls. Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues then tried to settle things down with a cautious 43-run partnership. However, the opener was dimissed by Omaima Sohail, with the scoreboard reading 61 for 2 in almost 12 overs.

A glimmer of hope was ignited in the 16th over after captain Fatima Sana struck twice in two successive deliveries to send Rodrigues and wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh back to the pavilion. However, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur held her nerves while playing a captain’s innings of 29 off 34 balls before getting retired hurt when India needed only four runs to win.

Sajeevsn Sajna hit the winning runs as she and Deepti Sharma remained unbeaten at four and seven runs each. The skipper Sana returned with bowling figures of 2-23, while Iqbal and Sohail claimed one scalp each for Pakistan.

Then it was Fatima Sana’s decision to bat first that backfired as her side managed only 105/8 in the allotted 20 overs. The Green Shirts got off on a disastrous note as the openers came in to bat, losing Gull Feroza in the very first over of the match. Sidra Amin later fell and Omaima Sohail died within seven overs with 33/3 on the board.

After the early debacle, Muneeba Ali offered some resistance with her sedate 17-run knock until she fell victim to Shreyanka Patil, thereby reducing Pakistan to tatters at 41/4. Meanwhile, the other all-rounder Aliya Riaz also remained unsuccessful to reach double figures as she became a victim of Arundhati Reddy itself.

Then, it was left to skipper Sana and Nida Dar to try and give the sting to things as it were. The latter was dismissed in the 14th over. While Dar ticked the scoreboard singlehandedly, there were wickets falling at regular intervals for Pakistan.

Dar finally walked back to the dugout in the last over after making 28 off 33. Syed Aroob Shah scored a 17-ball fourteen taking the Sana-led team to 105. Reddy took three wickets, Patil two, and one each for Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma and Asha Sobhana. Dar remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a 34-ball 28.
