Cape Town suburbs to enjoy new pedestrian footpaths

Several Cape Town suburbs are set to benefit from new pedestrian footpaths aimed at improving safety and accessibility for residents.

The City of Cape Town has started construction in Bellville, Uitzicht, Eversdal and Peerless Park West, with work expected to continue until 29 April 2026, weather permitting.

Construction will take place between 07:00 and 17:00 from Monday to Saturday.

The upgrades form part of the City’s efforts to make neighbourhoods more walkable and safer for pedestrians.

Improving safety and access

The project includes preparing road surfaces, strengthening the ground, installing kerbs and improving drainage before laying the footpaths.

According to the City, the improvements are designed to make walking easier and encourage more people to opt for alternative ways of getting around.

“These upgrades will make it safer and easier for residents to walk in their neighbourhoods and encourage more people to choose active ways of getting around,” said Urban Mobility MMC, Rob Quintas.

Where the footpaths are being built

New footpaths are being constructed along several road sections, including:

  • Riesling Street between Kanonberg Boulevard and Pontac Street in Oude Westhof, Bellville
  • Vatican Street (westbound) between Athens Street and Okavango Road in Uitzicht
  • Sondal Road and Kendal Road in Eversdal
  • Raan Street between Frans Conradie Drive and Horak Street in Peerless Park West, Kraaifontein

Residents and road users are advised to remain cautious while construction is under way.

“Motorists are urged to slow down, follow all road signs, watch out for uneven surfaces, and be mindful of construction workers as well as pedestrians that are walking past the construction sites in these areas,” the City added.
