The 4 May episode of Carte Blanche explores LifePod, South Africa’s first dedicated transplant ICU, a groundbreaking initiative designed by a group of medical students to accelerate organ harvesting and save lives.

With more than 5 000 patients currently on the transplant waiting list and kidney recipients often enduring waits of over a decade, LifePod offers a critical lifeline.

This specialised ICU aims to streamline the transplant process, improve organ viability, and reduce waiting times for life-saving procedures. The students behind the project hope it will revolutionise organ donation in the country and offer new hope to those in need.

Carte Blanche is a South African investigative journalism television series that airs on M-Net every Sunday at 19:00.
