‘Flamboyant’ inmate in hot water over fashionable prison outfits

An inmate at St Albans Correctional Facility in the Eastern Cape angered the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) when photographs of his tailored prison uniform went viral on social media.

FASHIONABLE INMATE UNDER INVESTIGATION

DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo referred to the photographs posted by the inmate as flamboyant.

The inmate was tracked down by the Department and could be charged. “The identified inmate is incarcerated at St Albans Correctional Facility in the Eastern Cape Region and he has been moved to a Special Care Unit for the purposes of an investigation,” said Nxumalo.

The man’s mobile phone, which he used to post the images, was also confiscated. The inmate caught social media users’ attention because his orange prison uniform was altered.

In two of the photos he is wearing a bomber jacket; in another, his top resembles an anorak without a hood. He is also seen posing with a cell phone while his gold watch gleams on his wrist.

Correctional Services stressed that mobile phones are defined as contraband in prison and therefore illegal access and use thereof is a punishable offence. The inmate will also face charges for altering his offender uniform, which is against department policies.

“DCS is deeply incensed by this behaviour and there shall be strong action and consequences,” said the spokesperson.
