Mamelodi Sundowns star future in limbo: His agent responds

Mamelodi Sundowns star future at Chloorkop is in doubt, as his agent responds.

Agent Mike Makaab has firmly denied rumours suggesting that Mamelodi Sundowns plans to release Zimbabwean defender Divine Lunga in January. “It’s not true. That’s not true (that Lunga will leave Sundowns in January),” Makaab stated as quoted by Soccer Laduma. Putting an end to speculation surrounding the player’s future.

Despite Makaab’s denial, sources close to the club suggest that if Sundowns fails to secure a loan opportunity for Lunga, the team may consider releasing him in January. The club has already let go of several players, including Gaston Sirino, Bongani Zungu, Sammy Seabi, Abubeker Nasir, and Brian Onyango. With other left-backs like Aubrey Modiba, Terrence Mashego, and promising 19-year-old Asekho Tiwani in the mix, Lunga faces stiff competition for game time.

Lunga’s contract and the need for game time

According to insiders, the situation poses a challenge for Lunga. “His contract is set to come to an end in June 2025, so if they let him go in January or on loan, then it could also mean he is leaving Sundowns at the end of the season. That’s what they are working at,” explained a source close to the club.

The source added, “The club’s main aim is to give him a chance to play, as there is tough competition in his position. The technical team seems to prefer Asekho Tiwani and Aubrey Modiba over Terrence Mashego and Lunga himself. They believe that letting him go would be the best solution for both the player and the club.”

AFCON 2025 concerns

Another source highlighted the impact of Lunga’s playing time on his national team prospects. “He is afraid he may not go to AFCON 2025 in Morocco if Zimbabwe qualifies because he is not playing. He was not part of the national team, and that could affect his final selection for the AFCON squad next year. That’s why he wants to find a team where he can play.”

With the clock ticking down to January, Sundowns will need to make strategic decisions regarding Lunga’s future. The defender’s aspirations for international competition further complicate his situation, as both the club and Lunga seek the best path forward in the coming months
