Pakistan cricket, long a national pride and achievement, is decreasing owing to politics. The Bangladesh Test series whitewash followed a string of bad performances. Fans are frustrated as the club drops to its lowest Test position in 60 years.

Political Interference Blamed for Pakistan Cricket’s Decline

Former PCB communications manager Ahsan Iftikhar Nagi says instability hurts the squad. Changes in board chairmen, coaches, and captains have generated managerial turmoil, leaving the club battling to recover. Pakistan’s interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, chairs the PCB, raising fears of political favouritism and incompetence. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and others fear unqualified leaders imperil the sport’s future.

Cricket legend Khan, who led Pakistan to the 1992 World Cup, blasted the PCB for being led by “favourites” without sports experience. Some feel he handpicked board leadership during his prime ministership, causing current problems. Pakistan cricket has not won a home Test match since February 2021 and exited the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20 World Cups early despite a brief comeback.

Recent loss to Bangladesh has prompted calls for Naqvi’s removal. Many parliamentarians and journalists worry he can handle cricket and security. Cricket has united Pakistanis, but administration and political influence have left fans wondering if their once-dominant team would ever prosper again.
