Temba Bavuma’s ongoing arm injury means he will miss South Africa’s second Test against Bangladesh next week. The decision was announced by coach Shukri Conrad at a virtual news conference and showed that his medical team, which had done a lot in efforts to have him ready, did not advise rushing him back to the pitch. Bavuma had travelled with the team to Bangladesh to continue rehabilitation but was ultimately not passed fit to play.
This injury, which he sustained while batting in an ODI against Ireland, had been a recurrence of the one that kept him out of action for such a long time two years ago. Without Bavuma, Adiden Markram would take over the reins as captain. The next priority will be to have Bavuma fit and ready for the series against Sri Lanka at the end of November and early December.
With this careful approach to treatment, South Africa believes their captain will recover accordingly and not experience any setbacks in his career down the road. The second Test against Bangladesh gets underway on Tuesday in Chittagong, where Markram will lead the squad onto the field for what promises to be an important match as far as momentum is concerned for the team’s campaign.
