Weather Update: Wet Christmas on the cards!

The South African Weather Service has issued a rainfall warning for six provinces leading up to Christmas.

The provinces expected to experience heavy rainfall include Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, North West, and Limpopo.

Following an intense and prolonged heatwave that lasted over two weeks, many areas of the country are now experiencing cooler temperatures. The rain has provided relief in various regions as the festive season kicks in.

SA Weather Service predicts a rainy Christmas

The SAWS warned that several provinces will see significant widespread rainfall until next week.

“This substantial rainfall increase is likely to elevate the risk of flooding. As a result, the public is strongly urged to stay informed by following short-term weather forecasts and any warnings issued by the SAWS.”

“The expected thunderstorms may result in heavy downpours that may lead to localised
flooding, a possibility of damaging winds as well as hail in places over Gauteng, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga as well as the southern parts of Limpopo.”

With Christmas just a few days away, the weather service issued a yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rain in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga which is also valid from Saturday, 21 December until Sunday, 22 December.

The SAWS continue to monitor any further developments relating to the weather systems and will issue subsequent updates as required.
