Chop suey: A world-renowned stir-fry dish for the whole family

There’s easy cooking and then there’s stir-fry. A simple way of cooking, stir-fry variations are a great way to enjoy very healthy food made in a very short amount of time. Chop suey is a popular style of stir-fry is a great way to get that all-important protein and vegetable dose for each meal. It is however not authentic Chinese cuisine, but an American variation that’s often seen on take-away menus.
Chop suey suggestions
The recipe below is set for one serving but you can easily adjust the amounts of everything to suit the amount of people you’re cooking for. Chop suey is mostly served with pork or chicken, but beef is also great. You can also add some sliced red and green peppers for a great addition of colour and nutrients. If you have rice or noodles, add it to the mixture, add a scrambled egg and mix well for some egg-fried goodness.

Chop suey recipe

- Meat Marinade
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
¼ tsp pepper
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp cornflour (Maizena)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp water
- Stir-fry
1 cup chicken/beef/pork (sliced)
½ cup cabbage
¼ cup onions (sliced)
1 cup beansprouts or bamboo shoots
¼ cup sliced carrots
¼ cup sliced green beans
- Seasoning
salt
1 tsp sugar
freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp Maizena in 2/3 cup water
Method
- In a smoking hot pan or wok, stir-fry the meat until brown before removing and setting aside.
- Add some oil back into the pan and stir-fry the rest of the ingredients together before adding the meat back and combining.
- Season well and thicken the sauce with Maizena in water.
