Historic! Meet the first female ref to officiate a Springbok test match

The Springboks will be making history in more ways than one when they face Portugal for the first time in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 20 July. And this includes the test match being officiated by female referee Hollie Davidson.

The Scottish ref will become the first woman to take charge of a Boks test match. The South African squad will also include several uncapped players who will make their debut for the national team.

SA VS PORTUGUAL: WHO IS THE FIRST FEMALE REF?

In May, SA Rugby announced that Hollie Davidson would become the first female referee to take charge of a Springboks test match.

Hollie – who hails from Scotland – was also the first female referee to be part of an on-pitch officiating team for a men’s Six Nations fixture.

The 31-year-old told Scottish Rugby of her historic experience: “Sometimes, when you get these appointments, you are a little taken aback, so it is good to always reflect on where you started and where you are now.

“I very much see this as part of the journey to getting to the World Cup in 2027, so a good stepping stone.”

PRAISE FROM THE SPRINGBOKS

Speaking in a media conference, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that SA Rugby was “very excited” to see a female referee in a test match.

Bok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick also sang Hollie Davidson’s praises.

He said: “We know that Hollie is a respected match official. I like her confidence and how she communicates with the players.

“I want to congratulate her. It’s her first time referring the Springboks, and a well-deserved appointment.

He added: “Well done to World Rugby for empowering women and well done for bringing the change. That is what we talk about when we talk about transformation.

‘I’VE RECEIVED A LOT OF ABUSE’

Meanwhile, Hollow Davidson has acknowledged that it is not easy being in a male-dominated environment.

Speaking to the Stronger Than You Think podcast earlier this year: “I’ve received a lot of abuse and hatred and was spat on. At that point, you do question if it’s worth it…how long can I do this for?

“It worries my family; it affects my mom.”

Holly added that her dream was to officiate at a Men’s World Cup.
