‘I do not want to make promises’  – Nabi to Kaizer Chiefs fans

New Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi says he can’t make promises to fans but has pleaded for the club to be patient with him.

The 58-year-old tactician has only been with the club for three weeks but signs are promising. He gave his first press conference at Naturena on Friday ahead of Sunday’s pre-season Toyota Cup against Young Africans of Tanzania.

Kaizer Chiefs will play in front of their fans for the first time since Nabi has taken over. The Toyota Cup match will be played at the Free State Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

“Looking at the name Kaizer Chiefs, and how big the club is in Africa, it is unacceptable for the club not to have had a title in nine years,” said Nabi.

“Especially as the club has the biggest fans (in South Africa), and is the biggest brand in South Africa, even in Africa,” Nabi said during his first Kaizer Chiefs conference.

“The place of where the club is supposed to be. Where it has been and how big the club is, especially not having a title in a long time, that is what made me challenge myself to come here, the need to put the club back where it wants to be.”

Nabi wants Kaizer Chiefs should be honest with the fans

Amakhosi have now gone almost 10 years without winning any trophies, so it’s understandable why Nabi is cautious. Coaches such as Steve Komphela, Gavin Hunt and Stuart Baxter failed to bring success to the club in the past decade.

We need a very real strategy, we need to be honest with ourselves and our supporters,” said Nabi.

“We have to go forward without any emotions, and with a lot of realism.

“When we have analysed what we have, and put a strategy together of how to drive the club forward … then we should get somewhere.

“I do not want to be making promises or making declarations. I won’t just be a populist, making fans hear what they want,” he added as per Citizen.

Kaizer Chiefs fans have welcomed Nabi’s appointment with great enthusiasm and may show patience with the Tunisian coach.
