Overall, the matric class of 2024 achieved a record 87.3% pass rate which improved on the 82.9% pass rate achieved by the class of 2023.

Gwarube highlighted that in 2014, 150 752 learners achieved Bachelor passes and in just a decade this number has more than doubled in 2024 to 337 158 Bachelor passes.

“In 2024, I am pleased to announce that KwaZulu-Natal achieved the highest number of Bachelor passes with 84 470, followed by Gauteng with 66 979 and the Eastern Cape with 45 662. I am also incredibly encouraged by the fact that approximately 67% of the Bachelor passes achieved in 2024 came from Quintile 1 to 3 schools, which are typically found in our poorer communities. This percentage represents an increase from 2023,” she said.

Johannesburg West in Gauteng was the top performing education district with a pass rate of 97%, followed by the Fezile Dabi district in the Free State with 93.5% and the Umkhanyakude district in KwaZulu-Natal followed in third position with 92.8%.

The Free State remained tops in terms of the province with the highest pass rate percentage.

Every province recorded a figure of above 84% – which was well above the national average 12 months ago.

1. Free State – 90.9%

2. KwaZulu-Natal – 89.2%

3. Gauteng – 88.4%

4. North West – 87.5%

5. Western Cape – 86.5%

6. Limpopo – 85%

7. Mpumalanga – 84.99%

8. Eastern Cape – 84.98%

9. Northern Cape – 84.1%
