Najmul Hossain Shanto steps down as Bangladesh T20I captain?

The BCB has now, on Thursday, made it official that Najmul Hossain Shanto has decided to step down from his role as the captain of the national T20I side. This follows his earlier indication that he would not continue in the position after the conclusion of the home series against South Africa.

Earlier this summer, Najmul had decided to retire as T20I skipper after the 2024 World Cup in USA and West Indies. However, he later had a change of heart and expressed a desire to step away from leadership duties across all formats.

While the BCB had earlier signed off on his decision, a dramatic twist saw BCB President Faruque Ahmed intervene to reinstate Najmul as captain for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. Unfortunately, an injury in the series disrupted his leadership tenure.

Shanto finally told us that he won’t lead in the T20Is and we accepted it,” a senior BCB official said. “But since we don’t have T20Is on hand, we have time on hand, so we are not picking a new captain.”

“Najmul will stay as the captain in Tests and ODIs if there is no injury issue, and we have discussed it, too,” he added.

And now, with the vacant captaincy in T20Is, Litton Das is most likely to continue as the captain of the format for BCB.

Litton, who just led the side to a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies, said he would be happy to continue with the T20I captaincy for a longer term. He, therefore, is expected to lead Bangladesh in the shortest format going forward.

Although Mehedy Hasan had been a contender – he had filled in as stand-in captain during the West Indies tour – the BCB now confirmed that Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as captain for the forthcoming Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan.
