‘Kaizer Chiefs have the best defence in the league, but…’
After failing to keep a clean sheet so far for Kaizer Chiefs, a former defender at the club believes Amakhosi's current crop is the best around!
Kaizer Chiefs signed four defenders plus a goalkeeper at the start of the season in hope of improving their defence.
Chiefs also reportedly spent a fortune in ensuring that the five players get to Naturena but are yet to benefit.
Chiefs signed five defensive players
The first signing through the door for Chiefs was Bongani Sam, who joined from arch rivals Orlando Pirates. He was followed through the door by Rushwin Dortley, Fiacre Nwari, Inacio Miguel and Bradley Cross. These signings were thought to be enough reinforcement to ensure the club doesn’t leak goals like the previous season where they finished ninth.
However, as it stands, they find themselves in ninth place again under new coach Nasreddine Nabi. The Tunisian mentor started his new boys straight away and gave them an opportunity to gather momentum in the Chiefs jersey. However, the likes of Ntwari, Dortley, Miguel and Cross are yet to keep a league clean sheet for Amakhosi.
They need time according to Tsotetsi
Now according to former Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi, the club have the best rearguard in the league.
“First of all, for a goalkeeper to be good, he needs a strong defense in front of him so they can complement each other. But now, in this case, the backline is new, especially centrally. That’s the reason their goalkeepers are conceding in every game. The relationship at the back is still new; that’s what leads to most goals they concede. At Kaizer Chiefs, the coach is still cooking. A relationship doesn’t build within a second.” Said Tsotetsi to KickOff.com.
He continued to dissect the issue at Chiefs.
Best defence in the league?
“It’s not like the defense is not protecting the goalkeepers enough, but a relationship needs to be built first for it to work like a well-oiled machine. Inacio Miguel is new in the country; he was not signed by a local team, and he is still settling in the country. But he is a good center-back. So they should be allowed to make mistakes, that’s how they will learn. Give them a chance to rectify their mistakes and not change them in every match. I still believe they will do better in the second round of the season because Chiefs do have a strong backline. The only thing missing right now is for them to gel. To me, Kaizer Chiefs, they have the best defenders in the league. Let’s be honest. They just need to gel.” He concluded.
